I don't like this particular case

Real people fail. Real people can have failed marriages riddled eith moments of violence. Violence is never a permissible response to the antagonisms that can arise in marriage. But it happens. We do not know the caldron of personal histories, manipulations and resentments that gave rise to this violence. Perhaps the context and history behind it all, which we cannot ever know, can never constitute justification, nor even mitigation. But I feel a Robbespierrean head chopping is what's happening here.

Often when I look through the glasses of redemption and forgiveness for offenders, and argue for letting them move forward free of the burdens of thrir prior failings, I turn out to be wrong. Maybe I am here as well. But I do not like the permament absolutism, the demand for permament consequences, that all this represents.

Similarly, I do not like the condemnation that HRC took, long after the fact, because she chose to sanction, but not terminate, a staff executive who pursued involvement with a subordinate. I was saddened when in the tsunami of the me too movement she announced that she was wrong in balancing the complexities of it all, that the only right choice was termination of the man's job - and his career.

Life is complex, and responses to failings can reflect both justice and mercy. Do overs can be ok - can be the right thing. My gut says this man should have had his do over and we all should have moved on.
