The handling of the initial sex party/rape claim by Betsy Hoffman and ...
...that other douche, Byrne? —I forget his name— was the exact point in time that the decline began. They basically sacrificed the football program on that day, even saying that the program wasn’t important to them. The decline took a while, and wasn’t a straight line, because Barnett kept the program competitive on the backs of over-achievers like Klatt and co. despite impossible self imposed recruiting restrictions, but that was the start of the decline.
I personally believe the climb back to respectability began with Mac, and we are on the right track. Like the decline, it isn’t a straight line—kids enroll and graduate, solid coaches like Leavitt and Walters are hired and leave, but ultimately the program is moving toward respectability.
In the immortal words of Dennis Miller, “of course, that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.”
