Re very different times
Mac I is an incredible leader. He's a once in a lifetime sort of guy. He was not a fabulous in game coach but it didn't matter because he was smart enough to surround himself with incredible coaches. He was a rockstar of a recruiter who could sell ice cream to eskimos and he had a long term plan to get to the top.
Mac II does mot have one asst that could hold the bread basket for Mac I, he is the furthest thing from a rockstar recruiter and not that I'm privy but I certainly haven't seen or heard a long term plan for success.
If I were driving the train I would copy Mac I and come right out and say that USC is our new enemy. LA is and always will be a fertile recruiting ground. The circumstances in LA are not that far off from when Mac I was coaching. Crime is up substantially due to prop 47 which allows non violent criminals out of jail. I would get into the homes of the top recruits in the hard luck areas and tell them that I would get their son out of that environment, make him a man in 4 yrs all while receiving a great education in a safe town with the beat facilities in the business. To close I would tell them how great it's going to be when you beat your friends at USC and UCLA every year. On top of targeting LA, Colorado is positioned to get after Texas and Louisiana recruits. Mac I did an amazing job attracting players from both areas. I would go out and surround myself with the best assistants money and long term contracts could buy.
Mac II has done a nice job getting us to this point. I don't have confidence that he can get us to the next level with his assts, lack of recruiting the best players and lack of long term sustained success plan.
Les Miles would have us competing for a championship every year. Maybe LSU needs Mac II after this year.
