5-Years in: Comparing Mac-I to Mac-II
I love your post, Wheat Ridge, for all its history and great memories. But I think we (that includes me) forget how long it took McCartney to really turn things around. In his 6th and 7th year, many fans wanted him out of Boulder. He almost went to SMU.
6 games into their 5th year, here is how their records compare:
Mac-I: 16-34-1
Mac-II: 19-34
Other Similarities:
Both coaches took over a difficult situation. I would argue that MacIntyre's talent and PR situation were even worse.
McCartney had his first winning season in year 4, going 7-4. MacIntyre had his first winning season in year 4, going 10-4.
McCartney began year 5 with a disappointing 2-4 start. MacIntyre began year 5 with a disappointing 3-3 start.
I remember listening to sports radio back in 1986 and 1987 and people were saying the same kinds of things about Bill McCartney as we are hearing about MacIntyre today. "He'll never bring us to an elite level." Even after the sweet upset of Nebraska we finished 6-6, then lost 4 games in each of McCartney's next two seasons before the breakout 11-1 season in 1989.
Nobody can honestly tell me that back in 1986 they were anymore confident in the future of CU football than they are today in 2017 in MacIntyre's 5th year.
If CU pulls off an upset win against USC at home, and finishes 6-6 or better, this year would be almost eerily similar to 1986.
Now, am I saying that MacIntyre is the next Bill McCartney? Goodness no, but as your great memories have illustrated, Wheat Ridge, no other football coach in CU history has matched what Bill McCartney has done. That doesn't mean you give up on the current coach.
I am prepared to calm down a bit and see how things play out in this next year and a half.
