Farewell Hughes: 1968-2016

Yesterday was the final game in Hughes Stadium. The annual Spring Game between Gold (offense) and Green (defense). It was played and scored for offensive and defensive production. It was not like 2 different teams with both O and D making up each team. Some of the major scoring for D was 6 points for a turnover, 1 point for 3 and out and other means. The O received points as always for each score, 6 for td, 3 for fg, but they also got a point for a run of 20 or more yards, a pass of 30 or more yards. The final result was O winning 64-47.

Now for some of my thought s on the Rams. Both sides started out looking bad. D got some points on bad offensive play. But it did turn around. O started moving behind the QB play of transfer Bauta and running of Dawkins. And the o-line looked very good. The line has 4 returners from last year and they played with good unity and experience. Nice run blocking, good pulling and pass protection. The center Bennett, (jr), was checking the D and calling out offensive blocking schemes. Seemed to be right on. Some of the o-linemen were used in different positions such as Zerblis at both R and L guard. So that is for experience of the same guys in different positions if needed in case of injuries. But that is where it ends. There is no depth. When the 2nd unit was in, there was no cohesiveness and they looked weak. Dawkins and Mathews will be their main running guys. Dawkins looked good with his quickness and hard running. He follows his blockers very well and makes proper cuts. Reminds you a little of Speedy Stewart. Dawkins may be small, 5' 9", 175, but he is tough. Mathews was basically out, but he will be the hard runner for short yardage. And he ran patterns coming out of the backfield for passes that could be utilized for short yardage.

The Qb situation is probably settled even though Bobo says Bauta and Stevens are even. Bauta is definitely better with a nice pass and seeing the field. They say that Bauta only had 15 practices before this, but he came from Georgia where he was under Bobo. Steves kind of looks like Apsay. Some good passes, but many off the mark.

The weakness on offense is the receiving. The wideouts did not show much against a bad secondary. TE Peralta is a hard nosed kid and can block, but does not seem to be able to get open. Rams have had very good TE's. That is done. There is a tall kid, Freismuth, who was good at running slants, but dropped too many. There was a smaller kid, I think Wilson, who seemed to find open spots and was a go to guy later in the game.

Nothing special on the D except for DB Tyree Simmons. This guy is good and covers his position very well. And can hit. One LB who was ok, was Davis. Nobody else showed anything to get your attention. Rams lost many on D and it shows.

A weapon for the Rams is the punter Hayden Hunt. This guy could be one of the best in the nation. Booming punts to get Rams out of trouble. He may also have ability for placement inside the 10.

Bobo does seem to have the team buying into his game, but Rams just lack the players for a complete team effort. The offense will be able to move the ball as long as the o-line stays healthy. The D will give up a lot of points.

The next Rams Spring game will be the new stadium on campus. Farewell Hughes.
