Here's another story about

Gate -- I completely agree with you about this topic. Okay, here's a story from last June about a so-called "service animal." Tuesday are a day off work for me, so I thought I would be a good citizen and do community service by volunteering to work at the polls on an election day. You know those seniors who sit at tables and hand out ballots -- that's me. In California, every team of poll workers is headed by an Inspector, whose job is to ensure that the voting goes smoothly and everything remains calm.

So, last June I showed up at the appointed polling place at 6:00 A.M. Turns out that we are in a church, who lent us one of their Sunday School rooms - about size 20 x 20. Even with a light turnout, it is going to be quite crowded, because we are required to set up two table and at least 6 voting booths. 4 precincts are going to be voting there. The Inspector tells everyone that it is going to be tight, because all the voters have to enter and exit through one door -- the only door in the room.

So one of the other poll workers is a lady in about her mid-40's who is really dog crazy. All she can do is talk about her dog, and nothing else. She works for Pet Food Express and loves, loves, loves dogs and cats. She talks and talks about her big dog. ( some kind of German shepherd/Akita mix). Finally she says to the Inspector, "Could I just go home and get my dog and bring him down here? He wouldn't bother anyone." The Inspector tells her that dogs are not allowed into the polling places unless they are seeing-eye dogs or wear a service vest, plus it is not a good idea to bring one more thing into our room, as it is so very crowded. He tells her that he wouldn't want anyone to accidentally step on the dog or trip over the dog.

So she says, "Well, my dog is in training to be a service animal, and it would really help him to get used to being around strangers if I could bring him in here." This is a 10:00 in the morning, and we all have to work together until the polls close at 8:00 PM. So, I say to her, trying to be polite, "Sheila, why is your dog in training to be a service animal? You are very able bodied, you don't appear to have any mobility problems, you move around quickly and seem to be in good health."

Sheila says, "Oh, but I am going to get a service animal vest for him so that I can take him into stores. He doesn't like to be home alone, as the neighbors say he howls and barks, and it is too hot to leave him locked in the car while I go to the store." CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS??? She is going to take the dog with a service animal vest into the store and pretend she needs a service animal !!! She has zero health issues. Moves around better than I do. W.T.F. !! :-)

And, the things is, I am signed up to volunteer for the June 7 primary, and Sheila will probably be there again, begging the Inspector to bring her dog into whatever church room we are assigned to ! AARRGH !!! :-) - B4E
