...about fast reactors. This is what you are talking about when you are talking about "regenerating" nuclear fuel. (Though more accurately I think you mean recycling, plutonium, old nuclear warheads, and old nuclear fuel) There are very significant issues with these reactors not the least of which is your statement about storage issues. There are storage issues. These reactors "transmute" plutonium into a material not suitable for bomb making, that's good (and a very large reason fast reactors were pursued) but it is still highly radioactive stuff that needs to be kept safe for thousands of years. There are safety issues with the coolant, liquid sodium, which highly reactive to air and water, explosively, so tricky when you are making steam to generate electricity. Economic issues, in that Uranium is cheap to harvest, process and build reactors for, with greater safety.

It's not a silver bullet I'm afraid. Maybe nukes could be part of the equation, but they are anything but 'clean'.
