The fake punt. Games can turn on special teams plays.

I spoke about the fake punt a couple of days ago. It's in the link.

Oregon ran the fake punt because they spotted the possibility for it by scouting it in film, planned it and ran it because they knew it would work. You don't run a fake punt inside your own 20 unless you KNOW it will work. You could see all of them laughing after they ran it. I'm pretty sure they spotted the gap in the Colorado punt defense formation and spotted that the Colorado defensive players were turning back for a return before watching to make sure the ball cleared the punter's foot on game film.
You absolutely can't let a fat guy run half way down the field on a fake punt. The game turned for the worse right there. Colorado was down by 2 touchdowns and got a stop inside the 20. So far so good. Then they let a fat guy run down the field on a fake punt to great field position. The opponent scores again after that and they were then down by 3 touchdowns. They were demoralized and the game went from bad to worse.

The first thing you teach punt return players is to watch for a fake and make sure the ball clears the punter's foot. The first thing you teach kick off return players is to look for an onside kick and make sure it is a long kick. Return players have to look for these things as they are turning to run back or before they turn to run back. They can't start running back without looking to see where the ball is.

I have spoken about blocked and near blocked place kicks before. I have observed the left wing on the place kick team has a tendency to leave his inside gap open by going for the outside rusher. A rusher who gets through in that gap has a great chance to block the kick. Blockers on a place kick team MUST seal their inside gap first. The wing players can seal the inside gap and push the outside rusher with their outside hand if he is rushing close enough to reach them. It is very rare for an outside rusher to get in front of the kick to block it if the snapper, holder and kicker get the kick away in 1.5 seconds or less. Some say 1.3 seconds. The inside gaps must be sealed.

I have spoken about staying in your lane and turning everything to your inside on the kick return team. If you get out of your lane early and bunch up you leave a big gap for a speed returner to say goodbye.

I love everything about Coach Deion Prime Sanders and everything about the coaches and players who are now at Colorado. However, nobody is perfect. I'm certainly not. But simple rules that are overlooked on special teams can be very demoralizing to a team and can cost games. Hopefully these things are not being overlooked from here on out.
