How did you handle “chippy” games back in your day? And “dirty” games?

Good question.
I don't recall a lot of dirty hits occurring very much out in the open for officials and everyone watching to see like we seem to see in recent history. Chippy stuff tended to be settled by hitting a guy harder in a legal way. There was dirty stuff, but it tended to occur in pileups and wasn't openly obvious.
One example that became legend occurred in 1956 when Colorado player John "The Beast" Bayuk bit a Missouri player on the arm in a pileup after the Missouri guy was trying to gouge his eye. Nobody saw that, but the Missouri guy came up swinging at "The Beast" right in front of the officials and got a 15 yard penalty. The first down allowed the Buffs to run out the clock for a 14-14 tie and then go to the 1957 Orange Bowl. That was about 10-15 years before my time in high school and college.

In all honesty I put a guy out of a game in HS after he was trying to twist my arm off in a big pileup. He called me a big pussy. The next play I retaliated by taking a big swing at him that no one saw in the pileup. He sort of trotted off the field with a hand on his groin and I didn't see him again. I never started stuff like that, but ended it when it happened to me first that one time.

Very little trash talk was around before the internet. It's all over the place now and I think it has something to do with the open dirty stuff that's seen by everyone. I only recall a little trash talk before the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl against Houston in 1971.
They had a couple of really good players, Robert Newhouse and Riley Odoms. There was a little stuff about how Houston was going to kick our ass. The game was on their home field in the Astrodome. The bowl committee was telling Coach Crowder that Southwest Conference referees would officiate the game when he was down there negotiating the terms before we accepted the bid. Eddie walked out on them and a message came up to Boulder that we weren't going. Everyone was disappointed, and then suddenly we heard we were going. The bowl committee told Eddie they would have a split crew with Big 8 and Southwest Conference officials. They also agreed we would be the "home" team on Houston's home field and we would wear our black jerseys.
I recall some older guys were giving Colorado players pretty nasty looks after the game in the Warwick Hotel when we were celebrating our win, but nothing ever came of it.
