I spent many hours researching this some years back.

My approach was that all of the major religions maintains that the soul persists beyond this life. Aside from religion, there are plenty of stories told about the white light, tunnels, etc. On top of that, how many people have been obsessed through the years about ghost stories, the paranormal, hauntings, etc.?

After being a bit obsessed myself over this, I came up with the idea for a cool novel. It didn't sell much because I didn't have the energy to promote it, but I'm proud of the experience.

More importantly, it made me conclude there's not much of a difference between Christians saying that if you're good you go to 'heaven' - a human construct if ever there was one - and Hindus and others believing in reincarnating until you reach a perfect state. In fact early Christianity embraced reincarnation. It was in the 6th century that the Christian church decided that the rebirth of a soul was incompatible with their message about good and evil, heaven and hell, etc. - the soul's validation of which only the church could provide.

In short, I don't know if there's life after death, but the vast amount of circumstantial evidence makes it pretty obvious to me. What form that takes depends on when and where you lived, and who had the loudest voices at the time.
