That game, and the entire '89 season, holds a special place in my heart
My wife and I were still newlyweds living in Omaha when the '89 season started. We were in Colorado Springs on vacation for the first weekend of cfb. On Saturday (Sept. 2), we went to the Air Force win over San Diego State and saw QB Dee Dowis score 6 TDs. On Labor Day (Sept. 4), we watched the Buffs and new QB Darian Hagan dismantle Texas on national TV.
The Illinois game was 2 weeks later. We were back in Omaha and my in-laws came to visit us. They are huge Iowa and Big 10 fans. They had no respect for CU even though CU had just beaten Iowa the year before. I was working on the Looking Glass alert pad (I can explain that in a separate post if anyone is curious) on Offutt AFB that weekend and was able to watch the game there while my wife and in-laws watched it at our house. There was no texting in those days, so I must have called home about a dozen times to rub it in as CU kicked Illinois ass.
Of course, Illinois got revenge the next year, but it was fun to know my Big10 loving in-laws had to swallow their arrogance while the mighty Buffs proved they were one of the best teams in the country.
