Here's how to fix College Football
Please consider that I don't have all the details and figures, but just consider my general idea which was inspired by BuffsIn2002's comparison of the NFL a few days ago.
We need salary caps for coaches and NIL-paid players. Both should be bundled in the same package. One salary cap for the entire team. The cap needs to be based on the average coach's salary and current NIL opportunities today. Salary caps could change yearly based on market situations and evolving NIL opportunities.
This makes schools think twice before giving a coach like Riley a 10 million a year contract or signing a player who has $8 million dollar NIL deal. It gives the lesser schools a shot at blue chip players. It makes players think twice about bolting for the transfer portal just because they'd rather play for USC or Alabama. It makes companies and sponsors think twice about what kinds of offers they are making these kids and what will be successful for their business and image. It gives teams the opportunity to be creative. Perhaps some teams avoid these 8-million dollar kids in favor of a group of lesser paid players with greater commitment. Salary caps will create an innovative and creative environment for building a successful team which unlike today is not just based on how much money a school has. More importantly, every team has the same chance. Granted, some teams will have trouble even reaching the salary cap, but that will change over time. The game will grow as a result of making it more prosperous and fair for a far greater number of teams which thereby will result long term in larger fan bases and interest, TV revenues, and merchandise sales.
