I think the tax issue is being blown out of proportion
It is being used by those that feel like the athletes are getting too much to help justify their "anti-compensation" positions.
What is the federal tax burden on $30k a year? $1,000 at most? CU gives student-athletes an extra $6,500 a year just to stay eligible. Maybe CU can give each athlete $7,500 a year and now we don't have to argue about whether university athletes should pay taxes.
If the university starts paying certain players $100k or more a year as university employees, those athletes should pay their rightful tax bill on their earnings. Arguing that they shouldn't be paid because they will incur a tax bill is a bad argument to make.
