Here's a story you can probably relate to...
We have neighbors that live behind us that are like family to us. Last year at about this time, their oldest daughter got a golf scholarship to a small college. It was a surprise because she was a very average golfer in HS. Accepting the scholarship offer was the thrill of her life. Why?? Because even though her dad is a doctor and makes good money, they have six kids to put through college and they'll have four weddings to pay for in the future. The daughter was flattered that someone saw potential in her as a golfer and she knew the scholarship will help her parents pay for her siblings to go to college and her sister's weddings.
She didn't have a big announcement ceremony and there was no media knocking on her door to find out where she would go to college. She told us about her scholarship in her front yard while we were walking our dog. I'll never forget the huge smile on her face. She was beaming.
For the life of me I cannot understand how so many of these athletes, especially those from low income families, take these scholarships for granted and act like they are no big deal. I have literally heard college football players say they are playing football and representing the school for free. Really??
Scholarships can be a ticket out of poverty that impacts generations. So many kids would never be able to afford college if not for that schollie. But it's not enough for the primadonna football superstars ho have been coddled since they were little kids. They want the same money as the coach who has been paying his dues and working his way up for decades.. It's ridiculous how greedy and selfish people have become. Of course, there are also adults who are along for the ride because they see a way to profit off the superstars.
I'd love to see football and basketball players become employees of the school and pay them minimum wage. F*** 'em.
