What happens to pro athletes when they don't perform?
Not only will non-performing players lose their current NIL deals, they will be told to get into the portal (as they already currently are.) Alabama has been moving players on early for over a decade now. (Why do you think they graduate their players in 3 years? It's so Saban can move them on, ie transfer without any hit to the schools APR). The new transfer rule is a godsend to Saban as it allows him to update his roster much easier.
The majority of players in the portal are not there by their own choice.
College football is a business (and has been for a long time). There is a reason that KD, Boyle, and Rick George are three of the highest paid state employees in Colorado. It is only recently where players have been able to benefit at the same levels as the coaches and administrators. The reasons the schools are fighting this so hard is because it represents their piece of the pie getting smaller.
