I think this picture says a lot. These are NFL players in the draft mind you, so there are some differences as far as what players made impacts in the NFL with meaningful playing time. However, a brief look on CUBuffs.com shows that the numbers of players playing in NFL were very similar.
Note: Not even Oklahoma or Alabama had as many players in the NFL draft in the 70's or 90's. Nebraska was at the very top with 80. (Have to consider who actually played and made an impact) And as for the argument about Michigan vs. CU talent in that '94 game. CU had 10 more NFL players in the draft overall in the 90's than did Michigan.
But look where we are now. This is the steepest decline ever in our history and seems to still be getting worse.
GO back to the 70's under Mallory and it bears out one truth: CU was recruiting lights-out, better on paper than OU, but wasn't winning big. It is why we went after Fairbanks. It all made sense at the time.
