difference between progressives and moderates, because the Democratic Party is a big tent - almost too big.
1. The Progressive Caucus supports the squad - people like AOC, Tlaib, Omar, Cori Bush, Jamal Bowman etc. They didn't want to vote for the Basic Infrastructure Framework before the BBB infrastructure was passed. A number of them ( including AOC), actually voted AGAINST the BIF, in order to make a statement that BBB should have been voted on first. However, Pelosi did not have the votes for BBB. I thought that it was important to pass BIF first. That's the moderate position & the viewpoint that supports the Pres.
2. The Progressives support either defunding large city police departments or replacing them with social workers or crisis counselors. I am very opposed to defunding the police, which are needed to serve people of all races in all cities. We need a police dept. to keep everyone safe. This is the viewpoint of the Pres. -- I support it.
3. Progressives support Bernie Sanders and his Medicare4All plan. I disagree with that, because I don't think that there will ever be enough votes -- or enough funding, regardless of taxing the billionaires, for Medicare4All. I would say to keep and strengthen the current Affordable Care Act.
4. Progressives usually want to decrease defense spending or at least hold the line on it. With these large military bills coming up for a vote, in this case, I support sending aid to Ukraine and to other countries threatened by Putin's brutal regime. This week, you will see some Progressives voting against these bills. I think they should be passed ASAP.
5. Social problems and crime: In San Francisco, the D.A.s policies have caused the city to be less safe, due to the smash and grab robberies, the large number of car break-ins, and the violence targeted at the Asican-American Pacific Islander ( AAPI) community in San Francisco. The D.A., Chesa Boudin, had never prosecuted a case when he was elected D.A. He had only served as a public defender, and his policy was to release even violent offenders from incarceration, to refuse to prosecute drug crimes, and to release most offenders to their own recognizance. You can read more about this lengthy topic simply by googling crime in San Francisco. I am in downtown SF quite often, ; and to me, it looks as if a once beautiful and peaceful city has gone out of control with lawlessness & drug abuse. The fentanyl epidemic is very severe, with record-breaking numbers of fentanyl deaths - it is very deadly. The Honduran dealers who sell the fentanyl and know how dangerous it is, are repeatedly arrested by the SFPD, then the D.A. returns them to the streets. While I favor the sanctuary city laws to protect undocumented workers, those laws should not apply to felonies, or to people who knowingly cause violent and unnecessary death. The Honduran dealers ( none of whom are here legally), know how much death and misery they are causing.
The campaigns to recall the School Board and the D.A. are supported by the majority of Dem voters in SF. ( I think it is about 68% support). Those recall efforts are led by Democrats -- there are not enough registered GOP voters to make a difference.
in conclusion, Manchin & Sinema ( although vilified) have tendered to vote for more Biden policies than the progressives have. I tend to favor moderate Democratic candidates with moderate policies. By "moderate", I mean moderate for a member of the Dem. party. -- B4E
