Congrats to Mr. Battey.
Good for Colorado basketball and Evan Battey tonight. I suspect most Colorado basketball fans know Evan Battey is the grandson of Earl Battey, one of the best catchers in baseball during the 1960s. Earl Battey played mostly with the Minnesota Twins. I followed Harmon Killebrew and the Twins when I was a kid. Dad was born in Minnesota so it was a natural for Dad and I to be Twins fans.
I always enjoyed basketball games in the old Fieldhouse. Players like Cliff Meely, Gordon Tope, Mike Coleman, Dudley Mitchell and Jim Creighton were around. One of the characters on the team was Scoopy Smith. We all got excited when Scoopy got in the game. We had Sox Walseth as coach. Plus there was always the big voice of Father Patterson, the public address announcer. I forgot the exact year, but one year back then the football team broke out the "Huck the Fuskers" t-shirts for the first time when Nebraska came to town for a basketball game.
(Ha! And to think some people believe Nebraska became a bunch of jerks only when McCartney coached football. An old friend of mine who passed away a few years ago was a 1950 grad, and he said there was animosity between Colorado and Nebraska back when he was in school.)
Here's Earl Battey:
