HC are responsible for hiring their assistant coaches.
Unless you are at CU and you get stuck with a couple.
As a former HC at the HS level. I have had good and bad assistants and you can’t overstate the impact of either. This is where I think the downfall of many coaches comes into play. It seems that the tendency for some of the coaches like VJ is to give their buddies who they feel have also been overlooked a chance. Embree at CU seemed to do this as well. This is completely understandable, and Sometimes this works. It’s been a while, but it seems like nearly everyone in VJ staff was upgraded to a higher level than they had held previously.
This happens in many staffs, but not say Kubiak’s. There were experienced coordinators, ie Wade Phillips.
Fangio didn’t bring in a quality OC. The line got better with Munchak (sp?) this year, but assistants will make or break you. If a HC can’t bring in quality assistants, they won’t be successful no matter how many years they get.
That said the ownership debacle with the Broncos has undermined anyone as much as any QB or lack of one. Hopefully that is remedied soon.
