College football has got to find ways to even the playing field.
But the schools at the top - the P5 schools - have been busy pretending their privileged position arose from just being smarter - and pretending the barriers to entry they created were the natural order of things.
So now they are seeing things from the other side - there will be what - maybe 10 schools that will not have the power and money all focused on them?
A sub narrative that is developing is to further the exclusion of non- P5 schools.
Here’s the problem - nothing - nothing - suggests that this will really solve itself. I can’t imagine a union somehow getting implemented - unless the P5 schools greatly flattened revenue distribution so that the benefits of unionization at CU or CSU were so very great that those kids were interested in joining.
And short of unionization or federal legislation (which ain’t going to happen) we are confronted the the CUs and BYUs of the world never again having a shot at a magical year or two or three.
So now - some kind of inspired leadership that protects all programs is needed.
