Your anger is understandable, but the logistics of dealing with


critical staff shortages can be overwhelming.

If you try to have school on a day when there will be a large shortage of teachers, it will be a wasted day with potential security issues. I have subbed on days when there was a large number of teachers absent (that usually occurs when many teachers go to a professional development). Kids see it as a day off and don't want to do anything. I remember thinking that way as a kid. "Sweet, sub today--don't have to do anything".

I only sub in subjects that I can teach, so I don't give them that day off. But many subs are non-educator retirees looking to pitch in and help out. They see it as a flexible part time job.

Getting subs in Cherry Creek or DCSD is a different problem than getting subs in DPS or Sheridan. The people willing to sub tend to live out in the suburban areas and don't want to sub except near their home.
