As an English teacher, here's what I did in regards to assigning novels
from the required reading list. At the beginning of the year, and at Back to School Night, I would hand out a list of the novels / short stories to be read that year. I added a short description that might be of parental concern.
For example : "Romeo and Juliet" is required reading this year. Themes include teenage suicide and a physical relationship. If you think this might be an issue for your child, then call me or come in to a conference, and we will find an alternate book for your child to read in order to earn the necessary credit to pass the course. For example, I'll assign another Shakespeare play to be read independently. I can't simultaneously teach both plays in class, so the student will be doing a lot of independent work, but I'm happy to accept and grade his writing assignments and discuss them with the parents, if they can monitor him and make sure the work gets done.
Every parent with whom I ever worked, was agreeable to this arrangement. I let them know in advance about books with mature themes and offered an alternative. I let them know in advance. --- B4E
