Don't assume Mel left just because of money. There's more there.


If that were the case he might've taken the high road and given CU a chance to counter-offer. He did not, which suggests (and I'm leaning on some posts I've seen on this board) that there was more to it, likely some combination of the following:

1. Support from Regents and the overall administration, including teaching faculty.
2. Support from alums.
3. Local recruiting potential.
4. Facilities.
5. National recruiting (import) potential.
6. Other intangible realities, such as Pac 12 competition and conference dynamics.

I see it as a combination of multiples of the above, but 1, 2, and 3 jump out at me. #1 is at the top of my list for a reason, but I'm no insider. If I am close to correct, this is a hard thing to change without one thing: Consistent winning. The non-football crowd will jump on board "if they have to." That has been historically true at CU-Boulder.
