I think it is a drug issue

Several years back, Fancy Bears (a Russian Hacker group) hacked the WADA (World Anti Doping) system in part to show (in what they felt) the hypocrisy of the west's sanctions of Russia for doping activities (notice the Russian athletes this year are not participating under the Russian flag due to being sanctioned).

As part of that hack, it was revealed that Simone has a TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption) to take Ritalin for her ADHD.

Ritalin and Adderall are two ADHD medications that are commonly abused by college students and silicon valley tech-sters because it allows one to "focus" easier. MLB pitchers are also banned from taking those drugs for that very reason, it makes it easier to concentrate.

My understanding is Japan has completely banned both medications for ADHD (not just an Olympic ban, but for all people all the time). Consequently, Simone is having to compete for the first time without being able to use her medication. My theory is she can't focus to the level needed because she is flying solo (no Ritalin) this year.
