Good luck watching one with talent. The best go to the NFL

The main reason the AFL was successful is that the NFL was only in 12 cities in 1959. So, there was plenty of talent to go around. The AFL jumped into cities that the NFL wasn't tapping like Houston, Denver, Buffalo, Oakland, Boston, San Diego and eventually Miami.

They merged when it was on benefit to both leagues.

Now, with 32 teams carrying 53 and a taxi squad, there isn't a lot of great talent out there especially at QB.
