Should protests be a part of the Olympics?

I've always viewed the Olympic Games as a unifying event, where all Americans can put aside their differences for a couple weeks, take pride in our country and cheer on our amazing athletes. The IOC Charter is very clear on the matter, "No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."

You may dismiss it as no big deal, but the fact is that by kneeling today, the USWNT has reinforced the polarization of America. As a result, a large faction of the country is now hoping the US team loses. All of which runs counter to the idea (as naive as it is), that the Olympics are a celebration of sport that transcends politics.

I understand the opposing argument that it brings global attention to the cause. Smith and Carlos from the '68 games are now recognized as heroes (they were a helluva lot braver than 21st century overprivileged white chicks, but I digress), but are the Olympics the right forum or does it help to undermine what the Games represent?

Just throwing it out there.
