Get prequalifed from a credit union in writing, know exactly what you want.

in a new car down to the color, etc. We used Car Max to give us a written price to sell to them instead of a trade in. And then we took that to the dealer and presented it and said, to either meet it or we would sell it through Car Max. They wanted our old cars because they were in excellent condition and had really low mileage. Helps to even pay to get your old car detailed to make it look like it's worth more.

Go to a dealership and present all that stuff and what you want and are prequalified. Don't let them handle the financing! And then you can say what you are willing to pay and not to add on all that extra crap they pay someone to do. Stick to your price as long as it's reasonable. If they try to screw you around, leave and go to another dealer. Usually they will give in.

We have learned a lot about buying new cars. We won't play their games...too time consuming and too tiring.
