They have done pretty well against competition that isnt Godzilla-like

First, they actually have been competitive with Clemson. They beat them last year in double OT before the playoff game blowout. Barely lost to Georgia at Georgia two years ago. They are 6-4 against ranked teams the last three years, two of those four losses to Clemson, so no shame there.
The measuring stick, so to speak, would be what do we think they would do if they got thrown in the SEC east the last few years instead of their schedule as it stands now? Would they be a perennial 10 win team, or would they lose 4 games or so a year with an occasional 10 win season sprinkled in every 4 years. I think the latter.
