Need MORE funding

Yes, more funding and more education.

The video of the confrontation with the lady shows she was taken down as it was somewhat dark outside. People with dementia often experience something called "sundowning" when it gets dark later in the day. It is characterized by confusion, fear, agitation and anxiety. The symptoms can rapidly get worse if they are approached by people confronting them. They probably don't even know the people are police officers if it is police who start to confront them. This is something I tried to explain to the police commander during the mediation session regarding the incident with my Dad.

I suggested to him that the Colorado Springs police need to be educated to recognize what is happening to someone with dementia when they are confronted. The reaction of the person with dementia can become very physical if they are approached closely and more so if they are touched. The fear reaction can escalate very quickly. This is what happened to my Dad. The incident occurred late in the afternoon during winter when daylight had faded.

Of course, police do not know who they are dealing with when they approach someone and they must be careful for their own life and the lives of any others in the vicinity. This is true whether the person is young and strong or elderly and frail. Unfortunately, decisions by police officers sometimes have to be made in only a second when a life suddenly appears to be in jeopardy.

Nevertheless, more funding and more training may better prepare officers to better assess situations as they approach them.
