60 Minutes

I’m sure there is more to be uncovered - but at this point I have to say it looks like 60 Minutes really screwed up on the DeSantis story.

If there’s anything mass media should learn - you’ve got to be right - and make damned sure you’ve covered your bases. Every mistake is exploited and delegitimizes your reporting. Every mistake does far more damage than can be imagined.

So here’s 60 minutes. Every story they want to tell - no matter how well documented - will now be thrown out by those who will use it as an excuse to avoid the truth.

I know of course from my own experience here. A couple of weeks ago - I misunderstood the times polling places in Georgia were to remain open. I was wrong - and when it was pointed out - I quickly acknowledged the error as my mistake. But I am routinely called a liar (and “misrepresenting” is code for lying - I know that) because of that mistake, even after taking my lumps.

So - unless something else comes out - 60 minutes has done great harm to itself and to all media organizations, and even to our culture, by getting it wrong. And they have unwittingly advanced the prospects of DeSantis, who certainly looks like on this issue he was acting properly.
