About HALF A MILLION student-athletes according to the NCAA. For 98% of them, college is the pinnacle of their sports careers to which they have dedicated a large part of their young lives.
I get that football is big business and is the revenue generator for most athletic departments. It also makes possible opportunities for kids who are extraordinarily talented in other sports, especially women. Should they be denied the chance to pursue their dreams because the ball they play with is round?
You're also right about poorly run athletic departments who operated in the red BEFORE COVID cutting Olympic sports instead of looking at other solutions (coaches salaries, facilities, etc.) For the 2019-2020 school year, the SEC made MORE money than the prior year...without the NCAA basketball tourney. It's an excuse.
I lean favorably to NIL and letting standout athletes profit from their success. Where I have an issue with Booker's legislation is the revenue sharing piece...where a 3rd string punter who never plays gets a share, while a star female soccer player isn't eligible.
