I just saw an explanation on cnn by a pilot/lawyer for aircrafts...

was very good. He had a similar engine, a pointer and showed how a titanium fan blade snapped and the belt that encircled the engine to keep the blades inside fell off but that was after the first broken piece was pushed backwards and then more pieces broke off and then all the fans just all snapped which caused complete engine failure. This is basically the same thing that has happened to different Boeing aircraft incidents in the last three years. Now all of that fleet have been pulled from service for inspections and investigation.

He also said, these planes fly so often, so far, back and forth all over, and inspections are routine but they are only done by visual inspections. It seems to me, this is an aging fleet of airplanes.
