I’m an addict
I don't mind describing my addiction. It is a terrible thing. I was addicted to nicotine for about 20 years. Copenhagen snuff. I picked it up working on summer jobs with the county highway department and a lumber yard. As I'm sure you know, nicotine is one of the most addicting substances known. The nicotine in the amount of Copenhagen I was eventually using was equal to smoking about 2.5 packs of regular cigarettes per day.
I came across the topic of oral cancer and tobacco several times during my career in academic medicine teaching gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology and pathology; along with research in teratology. In many cases of oral cancer the surgical approach includes removing the patient's mandible and associated tissues. The patient frequently dies a year later after the horribly disfiguring surgery. I decided I didn't want to die that way so I quit Copenhagen cold turkey. I was finally relieved after about 3 months of waking up at night with chills, sweats and shaking along with the desire to go to the nearest 24 hour convenience store and buy a can of Copenhagen. I might very well be dead by now if I didn't quit when I did.
Hopefully, you have also been relieved of your addiction.
