You have completely misread McConnell's intention. He knows that there is a better chance of Senate guilty verdict after Biden's inauguration and the two new democratic senators from Georgia are sworn in. More republican senators will be willing to go against Trump once he is out and can no longer wield the bully pulpit of the presidency. Also, the senate cannot conduct the trial until the articles of impeachment are delivered by the house. There are rumors that Pelosi and the dems hold off on delivering the articles in order to avoid disruption to Biden's first 100 days.
