The more white kids don't use the n-word in thought or speech, more likely
they'll grow to be cognizant of not using it. If they do use it, it can cause problems whether they mean to be derogatory or not. I grew up with it being a taboo word amongst me and my teammates. One of my HS basketball teammates was called the n-word during a game and we took care of it. We wasted a few fouls on the guy.
I would not allow my son to listen to graphic rap lyrics because of use of misogynistic and racial slurs. I think it worked. I don't know what he's thinking no though
He does say "Nice putt Alice" when I leave a putt short. Or "hit it with your purse next time Sally".
