Because they play more than 2-3 tough games a year now

The dirty little secret no one has mentioned is that much of the Corn’s fall from relevance is scheduling.

In the Big 8 days, they’d play their trademark cupcake nonconference schedule (always embarrassingly soft to where fusker fans automatically played the “no one else would play us card”😂). After an easy 3-0 or 4-0 start beating up on nobodies they would play K State (one of the worst programs in the country pre-Snyder), Iowa State (so bad back in the day), Kansas (need I say more), Mizzou, OK State (sometimes decent teams but seldom great). Then they’d have us (sometimes a challenge sometimes not) and the big game vs Oklahoma.

So they’d have 1-2 big games in most years. Win those and they’re headed to the Orange Bowl with a shot at a title. NO other team had such an easy path for so many years. Were there good NU teams? Yes some were very good, but if they had played in a tougher conference they would not have been nearly as successful.

As long as they play in the B1G (even in the weaker division) they will never return to the glory days because they can’t get the Charmin soft schedules that were their bread and butter.
