Overstatement. Much more nuanced than that

First, Democrats picked up Senate seats. Not as many as they wanted, but they still ended up in the black there. Second, although they lost house seats, they still won the majority of races--and the majority of votes by almost 2%. And of course, Biden won with the largest popular vote margin since 2008 (and second largest since 1996). To say that this election was a repudiation of the Democrat's message is a huge overstatement, and it's belied by the results. That narrative exists primarily because polls overestimated Democrats' numbers and projected bigger wins. If you take a more neutral view, it's clear that this election was far from a repudiation of Democrats. More of a cautious acceptance of them.

I suspect that you might claim that Trump weighed down Republicans and that Democrats should've done better. In fact, Trump fueled GOP success, and they likely would've done much worse without him. Again, the numbers bear this out. There was some ticket splitting by Biden Republicans. But ticket splitting was actually far lower than historical average and weren't what really decided downballot trends. Biden won 8 house districts that went to GOP reps; Trump won 6 that went the other way. That hardly supports a narrative where moderate Republicans delivered Biden's win but otherwise repudiated the Democrats' message. In reality, it's much more nuanced than that.
