On Lafayette Square’s Imprisonment

The site of prayer and protest -
where freedoms rang,

Has given way to a dark soul
Brandishing a bible - upside down
To claim his place for time and eternity

The square now stands
the site of freedoms denied,
dissent crushed and scattered
by tear gas, soldiers and horses

And this place where freedom sang
Has itself been imprisoned
Encircled by iron, wire and barriers

To silence all who seek
to speak, to petition, to rally.

This is our holy ground.
This is our sacred place.
Stolen from us. Taken from us.

All of us.

But we shall retake that place.
Free it from its iron shroud
And we shall raise our flags
And read our scriptures

Standing on that holy ground
Now Reclaimed,
Now renewed
Now resurrected
