None of them started out with big bucks.

They hired solid strategy guys who could also recruit. Sometimes lucky in coaching, sometimes good. This was before the big money era of basketball. They found guys with strong coaching pedigrees and gave them a chance. CU has never done that, not because of lack of money but because of lack of interest from the top down.

We got lucky with Patton until he was in over his head, then he collapsed. We took a flyer on Bzdelik and he jumped at the first better opportunity. We completely underperformed in our coaching search that resulted in Boyle, and he has overperformed. I think he's shown us the best he can do in terms of results.

I've been on this board for about 20 years now saying the same thing: Expect excellence in all aspects for the coach you have. If they fail, find somebody who can recruit quality and knows how to coach 'em up. I have yet to see that happen.
