Next time you have surgery
The truth about surgical masks in the OR is they help prevent the OR personnel from spreading contagions they may be harboring that may spread via a respiratory release to an open wound in the patient being operated on. They do not prevent the wearer from any contagions. The wearer needs to have an N95 mask to help guard themselves from any contagions. Since surgical masks may help prevent spread from an infected individual, it is obviously recommended to wear one while inside closed areas since you may not know if you are harboring the virus and may potentially spread it. There are a lot of misconceptions about masks.
