My Joe Morgan story

in 1975, a bunch of us from the student newspaper at EKU went from Richmond, KY to Tampa/Clearwater for spring break---mostly to watch spring training baseball. I was sports editor of the student paper, so I got some press passes to the field for some games.

One day the Reds are playing the Minnesota Twins and most of the starters weren't playing. I was wandering around and saw two guys over on a back field practicing bunting techniques. I walked over and security let me due to the press pass. I went behind home plate and it was Rod Carew and Joe Morgan working on different bunting strategies. It was amazing to hear them talk about different ideas concerning art of the bunt. I was the only person privy to their conversation. Morgan said hello and asked if I wanted to ask any questions. "Sure!"

I hit the jackpot that day and got to interview both Joe Morgan and Rod Carew. My next article in the paper was about that interview.

All those other college kids were getting drunk and getting laid in Daytona and Cocoa Beach--Suckers!.

I got to meet Rod Carew and Joe Morgan!
