Air Force beat Navy, and Kev, I thought you might like this from WWII

Here is one of the night aerial recon photos of the town of Villedieu taken 6 June 1944 during the hours before the invasion started in the early morning. It was the first combat mission of D-Day. The 155th Night Photo Recon Squadron sent 4 aircraft over the Normandy area just beyond the invasion beaches to identify any enemy troop movements toward the beaches and identify enemy locations.

The writing in red grease pencil is my Dad's. The name Edgerton refers to Dr. Harold Edgerton, the M.I.T. Professor who invented the high speed flash photography used to take the aerial recon photos. He was with the squadron to troubleshoot any problems as they moved from England through Europe during their 12 months of recon operations. Notice that slit trenches were identified on the photo which indicated there were enemy troops occupying the town.
(I hope the photo shows up on the post.)
