Reasoning skills are scary.
I don’t teach AP so I try to keep as many students as I can. Those reasoning skills are what I ultimately try to teach as well. Word problems scare many students because they are poor readers and haven’t been taught to reason effectively. Nearly every problem we do is a word problem or deals with a graph or data table. It’s anecdotal, but it’s common for students to find me after taking physics and telling me they went from low 20s on the ACT science reasoning to 30+.
