That 5-6% you mentioned totaled 600,000 people who were taken from their homes, shackled, and placed on ships so crowded that many chose to jump overboard knowing they would drown rather than stay on board to either die from disease or live a life of servitude. Many estimate that between 15 and 25 percent died at sea. And when they arrived, we enslaved their children for generations. By the time of the Civil War, there were 4 million slaves in the US, comprising more than 10 percent of the total population. And after slavery was abolished, white Americans took back the land that freed slaves were granted and began a hundred years of Jim Crow. This is what our country--the land of the free--did. That is a national embarassment. Period.

I can guarantee that Pop didn't take time at his presser to point out that we weren't the only country that participated in the slave trade. Know why? Because he isn't interested in making excuses or diluting our responsibility. He's interested in accounting for our shameful past. Your post resembles the response of a child who has been caught misbehaving and says, "but everyone else was doing it." That's weak and doesn't show accountability. If you hold yourself to a standard and you fail, you own up to it. Period. You don't dilute it by pointing out you weren't the only one.

This is a site primarily focused on football, so I'll use a football analogy: when a quarterback has a press conference after a loss, do you want to hear him say that he only accounted for 5-6% of the mistakes the team made? Hell no. I want to hear him say that he messed up and the loss was on him. That's what leaders do. That's what people who want to fix a problem and not just save face do. We're supposed to be the shining city on the hill, not the one that's satisfied to blend in with its enslaving peers. Kudos to Pop for expressing that and not watering it down with excuses about what other countries did.
