Collectors buy them because they are new and different...
and like anything, you buy for what the value might be in the future. If everyone buys one, that cuts any perspective value and it becomes a "common". But it's a fun hobby and doesn't hurt anyone...not like the stock market where people enjoy betting on their futures.
Of course when they end up taking a lot of space in the garage, as our kids cards have, they are nothing but junk because when they "were in the business" years ago, they sold off all the valuable cards and made nice profits. Now it's all worthless, no matter the condition which many are perfect but the athlete never panned out.
