the catcher comes out to the mound with whomever else is in the photo. They take the photo immediately after he throws the pitch. So he's going to be standing next to the catcher, and he needs the mask.

We used to have season tickets to Dodger Stadium. The photographer stands right at the side, waiting to do the photos of the first pitch battery each night. There's a group photo of this occurrence every night of the season.
