Black kids are recruited by HS/Little League FB and hoops coaches..
Basketball club coaches push spring/summer play. FB coaches push track for their athletes. Baseball doesn't make you bigger, faster, stronger like track does. Youth baseball does not go after as many Black athletes because the clubs want to make money from suburban families. They don't want to give a discount to an inner city kid (White, Black or Hispanic).
The best athletes were going to baseball from 1900-1960ish. Football, basketball, track and now lacrosse and hockey have taken so many since that era. White kids seem to be playing hockey and lacrosse much more now than before. Black athletes that aren't hoopers run track, generally. Obviously, there are still good White and Black athletes that play baseball, but the above reasons are why Caribbean, Mexican, Venezuelan, Korean and Japanese are getting many more opportunities.
What Desmond says about 8% of baseball being Black is very unfair. He is discounting the Hispanic Blacks which are much more prevalent than American or Canadian Blacks in MLB.
By the way, if we are expected to capitalize Black, then we should capitalize Hispanic and White.
