Read his statement. He blasts racism and poverty and then says

"The COVID-19 pandemic has made this baseball season one that is a risk I am not comfortable taking".

He seems to be making two separate statements. Maybe the connection is that he feels he needs to be there to guide his kids during a time that is tough for black and biracial youth. He is also pledging to help in the community. Plus he has a pregnant wife and 4 existing kids.

I think he would have been better served by not tying Covid and racism together in a single announcement. You seem to think he pointing to the lack of blacks in MLB. I didn't see it that way.
