RIP: Wes Unseld

Wesley Unseld played for Seneca High School in Louisville, KY, graduating in 1964. My sister had classes with his older brother, George who played at Kansas. Unseld played for the University of Louisville because Kentucky had racist Adolph Rupp as it's head coach. SEC schools were not recruiting black athletes in the mid-60s. Unseld and Butch Beard, another black Kentucky HS player that UK wouldn't recruit (he played for the Knicks while Wes played for Washington in the NBA). They led Louisville to a #3 ranking during the '68 season. They lost to Elvin Hayes and Houston in the NCAA tourney. UCLA was on it's run in those days and beat Houston in the championship after losing to UH in the Astrodome earlier that season.

When Wesley was in HS, he and George worked summers for his father, who was a roofer. When I was about 9 they put a new roof on our neighbors and our house. I remember taking them some lemonade and how huge they were. I remember sitting in the shade and watching them work. They were very nice and incredibly hard workers. Their Dad let them shoot a few hoops with me in my driveway. They were awesome guys.
