The sports section was my link to the outside world!

In Alaska, we were very isolated from college and pro sports. We moved to Colorado in the summer of '71, before there was pro baseball and hockey in CO. No Sky Sox in Colorado Springs. I read the Gazette Telegraph sports page every afternoon and on Sunday morning. I used to love baseball and football box scores. You can tell so much about a baseball game by when runs were scored, pitching changes, etc. I truly believe it helps a kid's comprehension and analytical skills to look at those box scores and try to piece together what happened. I also loved the college football Bottom 10 column. It was hilarious.

I loved baseball card gum when I was a kid! Now it would break my teeth and the smell is too sweet. Me and my neighborhood buddies would ride our bikes to a convenience store that used to be on the corner of Wooten Rd. and Galley Rd. in Colorado Springs. We'd buy some packs of cards, take them home, and see who we got. It was like Christmas day opening those cards!
